Dongjing Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Early Cretaceous, K1dj, (34)

Province:
Hunan

Type Locality and Naming

Hengyang Basin. The Dongjing Formation was erected by Wang Shui in 1962 in his report on the red beds of the Hengyang basin of Hunan. The section for the designation is at the Dongjing Village of the Hengyang County of Hunan and the reference section is from Yunshanling to Shangmei in Dongjing of the Hengyang County, Hunan.

The Dongjing Formation occurs under the Shenghuangshan Fm and over the Lower Jurassic Coal Measures Fm at the Dongjing Village of the Hengyang County, consisting of brown red gravel-bearing sandstone and siltstone with mudstone. It was assigned to Early Cretaceous. It was quoted in the regional geological survey report compiled by the Hunan Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources in 1973.

Lithology and Thickness

The Dongjing Formation is represented by a set of purple red sandy conglomerate with mudstone, which is roughly divided into two members. Lower member is represented by purple red and yellow brown conglomerate, sandy conglomerate and limy and sandy mudstone. Upper member is purple red thick-bedded sandy conglomerate and limy and sandy mudstone. It is 553 m thick.

Lithology Pattern:
Conglomerate

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its base is separated from the Lower Jurassic coal measures by the appearance of purple red conglomerate interbedded with mudstone. It is lies unconformably on the Upper Triassic-the Lower Jurassic Coal Measures Fm.

Upper contact

Its top a conformable contact bounded by the purple red thick-bedded conglomerate at the base of the Shenghuangshan Fm.

Regional extent

The formation occurs in the Shenhuangshan area of the Hengyang County, central Hunan. It is quite persistent in lithology and ranges from 10 to 553 m in thickness. Southward to Chenxian, it is extremely thin or absent, and northward to Xiangtan, Zhuzhou and Liuyang, it is mostly absent. It is called the Qijiahe Fm in north Hunan and the lower part of the Dongxiachang Fm in west Hunan.
